What to bring on an online training course?

To get the most from an online training course, you need a reliable internet connection, a laptop or computer with a working camera, a quiet and private space to focus, and something to take notes with. Most of it you will already have to hand. A little preparation before your first session means you can concentrate on the learning itself rather than scrambling to sort out your setup once things are under way.

Equipment and hardware

The essentials here keep you connected and able to take part without interruption:

  • Laptop or computer, with power cable: A laptop or desktop gives you the clearest view of your course materials. Keep the power cable nearby so you are not cut short mid-session.
  • Headphones and speaker: Headphones help you focus and hear clearly, while cutting out background noise for everyone else on the call.
  • Excellent WiFi signal: A strong, stable connection is the one thing you cannot do without. If you can, sit near the router or use a wired connection.
  • Camera: A working webcam lets you take part fully in live sessions and makes group discussion far more natural.
  • Lighting, if required: Good lighting in front of you, rather than behind, makes sure you are visible on camera when it matters.

Software and resources

A few digital tools make the course run smoothly and keep your work in order:

  • VoIP app: For live sessions you may need an app such as Zoom or Teams, so install it ahead of time and test it works.
  • Bookmark links: Save the links you will use regularly, so your course and login are always a click away.
  • File storage for assignments: Somewhere to keep your work, whether cloud storage or a clearly named folder, saves time later.
  • Notetaking apps: A digital notebook keeps your notes searchable and in one place across your devices.

Stationery

If you prefer working on paper, a few basics go a long way:

  • Notebooks and pens: Handwriting notes helps a lot of people retain more, so keep a notebook within reach.
  • Sticky notes: Handy for quick reminders and flagging anything you want to come back to.
  • Planner or calendar: Note your session times and deadlines so nothing slips.
