What is self-directed learning?

Self-directed learning is when an individual takes ownership of their own development, deciding what to learn, when to learn it, and how to go about it. Rather than waiting to be told what training to complete, a self-directed learner actively seeks out knowledge and skills that are relevant to their goals.

It is an approach that puts the learner in the driving seat. That does not mean there’s no structure or support in place, but it does mean that the motivation and initiative comes from the individual rather than being imposed from above.

Why it matters in the workplace

In a professional context, self-directed learning is increasingly valued by both employees and organisations. For individuals, it supports continuous growth and career progression. For businesses, a workforce that takes initiative with its own development tends to be more engaged, more adaptable, and better equipped to handle change.

eLearning has made self-directed learning more practical than ever. With on-demand content available at any time, learners can fit development around their working lives rather than waiting for a scheduled training day to come around.
