How long are elearning modules?

The length of an eLearning module can vary depending on the subject, the depth of content and how it has been designed, but most modern modules, particularly those built around microlearning, run for between 3 and 15 minutes.

At Skillshub, our modules are intentionally kept short. Most sessions last just a few minutes and are designed to deliver one focused learning point rather than trying to cover everything in a single sitting. This approach is backed by learning science, which consistently shows that shorter, targeted content improves attention, retention and the likelihood that learners actually finish what they start.

Why shorter modules tend to work better

Longer courses can feel like a commitment, and for busy employees juggling day-to-day responsibilities, that alone can be enough to put learning off.

Shorter modules remove that friction. You can complete a session in the time it takes to have a coffee and still walk away with something genuinely useful to apply straight away.

That does not mean the content is lightweight. A well-designed five-minute module can be every bit as impactful as a much longer course when it is focused, relevant and built around clear outcomes.

What affects the length of a module?

A few factors influence how long any given module will be:

  • The topic itself : Some subjects, such as compliance or health and safety, require more detail to meet regulatory standards and may naturally run a little longer.
  • The format : Video-based modules, animated content, and interactive scenarios each have different pacing. A presenter-led video will typically feel shorter than a text-heavy course of the same duration.
  • The learning objective : Modules designed to introduce a concept will usually be shorter than those built to develop a skill in depth or assess knowledge through a quiz.

How long should you plan for?

Before you start, it is worth checking the estimated duration shown on each module, simply so you can plan your time around it. Most Skillshub sessions can be completed in a single sitting without any real disruption to your working day.

If you happen to be putting together training for others as well, the short module format makes it easy to spread learning across days or weeks, rather than asking people to block out large chunks of their schedule in one go.
