What does open-source mean?

An open-source LMS is a learning management system whose source code is freely available, so organisations can use, adapt and extend it without paying licence fees. Rather than buying a finished product from a single vendor, you get the underlying software and the freedom to shape it around your own needs, backed by a community of developers and users who continually improve it. Moodle is the best-known example, used by organisations and education providers across the world.

Why choose an open-source LMS?

Open source appeals to organisations that want control over their learning platform and the flexibility to build it their own way. The main draws are set out below.

Benefit What it means for you
No licence fees The software itself is free to download and use, with no per-user or subscription cost for the platform.
Full flexibility You can customise and extend the platform to fit your exact needs, rather than working within a fixed feature set.
Community-driven A large community of developers and users continually improves the software, fixes issues and shares resources.
No vendor lock-in You are not tied to a single supplier, so you keep control of your platform, your data and your direction.
Transparency The code is open to inspect, which many teams value for security, trust and peace of mind.

The trade-off is worth being honest about. Open source is free to license, but it usually needs technical resources to host, configure, secure and maintain. The software costs nothing, the expertise to run it well does, and that is the factor most organisations weigh up before committing.

Choosing the right LMS

Open source is a strong fit if you have the technical resource to manage it and the appetite to build your platform your own way. If you would rather have the flexibility and personalisation of a modern platform without the upkeep, a fully hosted option like Skillshub gives you that, with the hosting, updates and security all handled for you.
