SCORM is a set of technical standards that lets eLearning content and the platforms that host it work together, so a course built to the standard will run on any SCORM-compliant system rather than being locked to the tool that created it. It also defines how that content talks to the platform, which means completion, scores and time spent are tracked automatically. It is the quiet bit of plumbing that makes digital learning both portable and measurable.
SCORM stands for Sharable Content Object Reference Model, which is a mouthful for a fairly simple idea. It was created by the Advanced Distributed Learning initiative in the early 2000s to fix a common frustration, where content built in one system would not run in another. The standard gave courses and platforms a shared language, so any compliant course works on any compliant platform. More than twenty years on, it remains the default in corporate eLearning, which is why almost every authoring tool and platform still supports it.
